Four Tips for Getting Your Vehicle Ready
Winter is coming, folks.
And although we won’t necessarily have to deal with White Walkers or other fictional baddies, we do have to worry about blizzards, ice storms, sub-zero temperatures, and all matters of calamitous weather.
Out here in Lee’s Summit, we know how hard winter can hit, which is why now is as good a time as any to get your VW SUV ready.
Here are the four things you can do to ensure your SUV is good to go before the first snowfall arrives.
#1 – Prep Your Tires
As you may have noticed, the pressure in your tires will decrease during consistently cold weather. Because the air outside of your tires is less dense during the winter, it causes your tires to lose air pressure more quickly. Keeping that in mind, you’ll want to make your first order of business getting your tires to the correct pressure level. This will vary by vehicle type, so make sure to check your owner’s manual for the ideal tire PSI, not the number on the tire.
Additionally, you’ll also want to check the tread of your tires and potentially get them rotated. Remember, tires should be rotated approximately every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. If it’s been a while since you’ve had this done, take care of it as soon as possible.
Last but not least, if you can afford the expense of getting winter tires, it may not be a bad idea. We know a lot of folks here in the Lee’s Summit area use all-season tires – which are fine – but they’re not going to handle as well during a blizzard.
#2 – Check Your Car Battery
There’s a higher likelihood that a car battery will die in the winter compared to any other season. This is because the cold temperatures put an additional strain on how your battery operates. If you have an older battery (four or more years), have a professional look it over so they can tell you if it has enough juice left to last you for the winter.
If it doesn’t, get it swapped out for a new one. For you Volkswagen drivers out there, you can simply drop it off with our team at the VW service center. We carry a large stock of batteries for the VW Atlas, VW Atlas Cross Sport, and all of our other Volkswagen SUVs and sedans.
#3 – Upgrade Your Wiper Blades
If you’re still rolling around town with a $20 set of cheap wiper blades, do yourself a favor and upgrade those to winter-quality ones today.
We all know what’s coming: ice, sleet, snow, and all sorts of other surprises. These are the exact elements that chew up wiper blades and make them ineffective when you need them the most.
Start your winter off with a brand-new set of blades, and don’t be afraid to spend a little more on a premium variety. Your crystal-clear windshield will thank you later.
#4 – Check All Your Critical Fluids
The same way that winter is rough on your tires and battery, the same can be said for all of your vehicle’s fluids as well. For instance, winter weather can contaminate your brake fluid when it gets water molecules in it. This leads to degraded braking performance, so flushing out those lines and getting brand-new brake fluid before the winter is an excellent idea.
Another great winter prep trick is switching out your normal windshield washer fluid for a winterized one that won’t freeze up during cold weather.
Finally, if you haven’t had an oil change in a while, now is the perfect time to do it. Here at VW Lee’s Summit, we can safely recommend that drivers of Volkswagen vehicles can go up to 10,000 miles or a full year between oil changes.
Simply take your VW SUV into the VW service center, and we’ll take care of everything at once, so you don’t need to come back again and again this season.
