Burr Oak Woods Conservation Center (approximately 30 minutes away)

The Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area is over 1,000 acres of woods and natural wildlife that’s located in Blue Springs, MO. It is perhaps best known for its many nature trails (varying from easy to moderate), which are perfect for hiking. Burr Oak Wood Conservation Area also features conservation exhibits and a children’s area so that kids can get familiar with the local wildlife and their habitat. The nature center itself features a 168-seat auditorium and a 3,000-gallon aquarium that house native fish and live reptiles so you can get up close and personal. Out on the trails, you’ll have the opportunity to see deer, wild turkey, raccoons, and songbirds. There’s also plenty of spots for outdoor picnic with shelter areas spread out all throughout the property.

Wild Animal Safari – (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes away)

Located in Strafford, MO, Wild Animal Safari is a drive-thru park that gives you all the fun of the local zoo right from the comfort of your own car. There’s no need to own an SUV for these trails. You can drive your Volkswagen Jetta or Volkswagen Golf right on through the five-mile experience that features tigers, hyenas, zebras, water buffalo, and much more. The 350-acre property features over 65 species of animals that are guaranteed to wow you and your family. Tickets start as low as $17.50 per person (with purchase of four-pack passes), so this is the perfect road trip for those that want to experience adventure while remaining on a budget.

Hermann, MO – (approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes away)

You don’t have to drive all the way to California to discover wine country. It’s actually located less than three hours away, nestled in the quaint little town of Hermann, MO. This historic German community sells nearly 200,000 gallons of wine per year, which is about a third of the statewide total. All throughout town you can find wineries and tasting rooms that are sure to please any palate. Hermann also features zip line tours, local conservation areas, Graham Cave State Park, and several walking tours. For a small town that’s located off the beaten path, Hermann is packed with activities and local fare.

Weston Bend State Park – (approximately 1 hour away)

Located just a short drive away from Lee’s Summit you can find Weston Bend State Park, a midwestern hub for all sorts of activities for you and your family to enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re planning to carve out some time for a long weekend, you can reserve a campsite on their website. Weston Bend State Park is perfect for camping trips, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and experiencing local wildlife. They even offer historic tours so you can see Civil War battlefields and other sites such as the Mark Twain display.

Excelsior Springs – (approximately 45 minutes away)

Just under an hour away from Lee’s Summit you can find historic Excelsior Springs, which holds the claim to fame of being the first recorded site of discovery of spring water in the United States all the way back in 1880. If you’re a student of history, there’s a self-guided tour around the water bar that provides kiosk displays sharing the unique history of Excelsior Springs’ role in mineral water. Of course, there are plenty of other things to do and places to see while in town. Excelsior Springs features a thriving live music scene, plenty of local BBQ options, and guided wine & dine tours.

The Lake of the Ozarks – (approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes away)

There is perhaps no bigger and better party than the one that happens all summer long at the Lake of the Ozarks. Join the thousands of people out the lake for some good ol’ fashioned tubing, wakeboarding, skiing, or just enjoying the scenery out on the boat. When you’re not out on the water, the Ozarks offers plenty of local fare with its many restaurants, amusement parks, and shopping. Try to make a long weekend out of it, because the Lake of the Ozarks is simply too big to experience in just a couple of days.
