Breaking Down What This Means for the World of VW and its Electric Vehicles

Last year, Volkswagen did something that it had never done before in its illustrious history – it released an electric vehicle worldwide. Although other automakers rushed to market with their own iterations of an electric vehicle, Volkswagen took the opposite approach.

They watched.
They waited.
They developed.

For anyone that thought they had a head start in the electric vehicle market, Volkswagen single-handedly dashed those beliefs. Upon the release of the Volkswagen ID.4, drivers and reviewers alike hailed it as one of the best electric vehicles to ever hit the market.

In fact, the VW ID.4 would go on to win the 2021 World Car of the Year Award. Not only did it beat other EV heavy-hitters in the space, but it also bested every gas-fueled vehicle on the market as well.

The awards and recognition let Volkswagen leadership know with absolute certainty that they have a future in the EV market. In fact, there are several all-electric Volkswagen vehicles currently in development: the ID.3 hatchback, the ID.5 coupe, and the ID.Buzz microbus, just to name a few.

However, building out these all electric vehicles takes more than just great design in advanced engineering – it takes materials. Most notably, the essential battery materials that will allow VW electric vehicles to function. These materials include cobalt, lithium, nickel, and graphite. The onus is on Volkswagen to find these materials and a way to responsibly source them.

This is why the Volkswagen Group made the decision back in March 2022 to join the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).

What is IRMA?

Mining and sourcing raw materials is a huge industry, one that needs to be closely watched to ensure that it is being done in a socially and environmentally-conscious way. Sourcing materials like lithium and graphite shouldn’t put the planet or a group of people at risk.

This is exactly where IRMA comes into play. This initiative works with companies to ensure that they are able to source the raw materials that they need for their products in a safe and responsible way. Their methodology keeps environmental impact to an absolute minimum and keeps local residents and workers safe from harm.

IRMA is run by an experienced collective of individuals that consist of purchasers of raw materials, nongovernmental organizations, members of the mining industry, members of the community, investors, and organized labor officials.

Together, IRMA sets the standard for how sourcing raw materials via a supply chain should be conducted, which is why the Volkswagen Group is proud to be a member.

What Does VW Joining IRMA Mean for Business?

We know that Volkswagen plans on releasing a slew of electric vehicles in the future, which means they’ll need those essential raw materials for batteries. Think of Volkswagen joining IRMA as a commitment to doing things the right way.

Climate-neutral mobility is very much on the horizon for VW, but it can’t be at the expense of the planet or its people. Under IRMA’s guidance, Volkswagen will work with the initiative’s leaders to find a sustainable supply chain that is in line with standards and practices.

Volkswagen wants their customers to know that when they buy a VW electric vehicle, they are getting a responsibly sourced product. Innovation at the expense of the planet or human life isn’t good business, and VW firmly believes that.
